Lethbridge Naturalist Society
Lethbridge Naturalist Society is strongly encouraging new members. If
you are interested in a brochure, or to get further information on the society,
visit their website and
contact any LNS executive
member for information. The society gets involved with many naturalist
events throughout the year and has many summer outings where one can learn more
about flora and fauna in the Southern Alberta area. Field trips are often
arranged with knowledgeable members guiding the trip.
West Nile Virus
In response to requests from media outlets,
Alberta Health and Wellness now
provides daily updated numbers of human cases of West Nile virus in Alberta
through a status report on the department's
website
at 3 p.m. every weekday. Alberta Health and Wellness announced a total of
six positive cases on August 22. The Calgary Health Region and Alberta
Health and Wellness held a news conference on August 12 to announce the first
positive human case of West Nile virus. Human cases are confirmed in Alberta,
Saskatchewan, and Ontario. Go to
Health Canada’s
Website
Copies of public education materials such as the West Nile brochure that was
distributed to all Alberta households are still available. For more information
contact AHW Communications by email,
or phone 427-7164.
U.S.
Centers for Disease
Control Website:
Forty-four states have reported WNv activity in
birds, horses, mosquitoes or humans on the Web site. As of August 20, 29 states
have reported a total of 715 human cases, with 14 deaths.
West Nile virus fact sheets are available on the Alberta Health and Wellness
Website in a PDF format for easy printing. The list now includes tips for house
and garden, children, insect repellents, seniors, outdoor enthusiasts, and tips
for pets and other animals.
If you find a fresh, dead bird (crow, magpie, raven, blue jay, grey jay):
wear gloves, use a bag inverted over your hand, or use a stick or shovel to move
the bird into a plastic bag or container. Do not handle dead wildlife
directly with your hands. After packaging the bird (2-3 plastic bags),
wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. You can drop the bird off
at any Fish and Wildlife office in Alberta. To find the nearest office,
call toll-free 310-0000. Fish and Wildlife can only test fresh, dead
birds. If a bird is dried or rotting, it should be left where it is, or
disposed of in the garbage.
If you think you don't have to know this information, imagine having a dying
magpie on your front step on a long-weekend Sunday. What would you do?
