Sum'it Up 2004 was cancelled.
Watch for Sum'it Up 2005, an event scheduled for the last weekend in August just before school
starts. Sum'it Up is a literary arts day hosted by BGP Corp. To view of some of
the art work (handmade paper, sculptures) that were not able to be viewed
because of the 2004 cancellation, see my

Literacy Courses
As a computer support person, I have edited
and written both print and online newsletters which provided basic
information about computers, software and the Internet. Common sense
does not seem to prevail. People love the computer until it no longer
works and it doesn't take long for the naive and illiterate to run into
computer problems. Computers and software are sold with the expectation
that people will read the supplied manuals. The user just wants the
machine to function, they don't want to know how it or the software
works. They don't need to know the underlying details of how the
computer works (bits, bytes, nibbles), but they should read the
introductory user hardware and software guides that come with the
computer. Common sense should also prevail. Before running, buckle
up: not everyone runs antivirus software—they need to; not everyone
with antivirus software has their software set up properly to check for
email attachments—they need to; not everyone keeps their antivirus data
files up-to-date—they need to; not everyone patches security holes—they
need to; not everyone backs up their important data—they should.
Email is a communication device so misused
that it has become a disability. The problem goes beyond computers
though. People write about things they know nothing about and quote
people who lack the training and experience required to be considered a
content expert. Not everyone thinks before they speak—they need to; not
everyone checks information before sending it on—they need to. People
are given easy, free access to an email account with no training. This
is wrong.
What does this computer advisor say to
someone who complains about disappearing email message? Answer:
It's all in the view; it's all in the view. Your
email hasn't disappeared, you have just inadvertently tucked it away
without realizing it. Would you like to take my email training
course. I'll show you how to locate and organize your
mail.
If you are up to an Internet literacy
course, give me a call. 403-320-5815 I give personalized
training courses, at your convenience setting up your computer so that
you will be running your software at an expert level and I will teach you
about the setup. Setup and training session 1 morning or afternoon
at your computer station for a fee of $60.
