Respect the Privacy of Your Mailing List Recipients

If you have a list of people you are sending an email message to, use the Blind Carbon Copy function (BCC) of your email program.  By using the BCC instead of  the To or Carbon Copy (CC) function, you prevent others from gaining access to your mailing list. If you were given their email address for the purposes of getting announcement information, without also getting permission to make their email address public, your "publication" of their email address to all other members is a violation of their privacy.

Members may hesitate to discuss this since by doing so could potentially cause more attention drawn to the information that they are trying to keep private.

There are mailing list programs that assist with the moderation of mailing list where the list can be open or closed depending upon the privacy needs of everyone involved and enable other members who may need to do so, to post to the same list without having to redo mailing list work.

Blue Grama Publications management provides mailing list service.

Email Messages with Random Letters pass through Spam Filters

Random letters in the subject line and body of email spam assist an email message in passing the spam detection systems that use message/subject signature verification (such as SpamNet).  When a sufficiently long unique string of random characters is in the subject and body of each different copy of the spam the computer systems of ISP's who spam check for duplicates are defeated. When employed properly, this method of spam is very effective at bypassing these types of filters.
