Information about VCards

VCards are "virtual business cards", part of the S/MIME standard.   The file extension is .vcf.  These files can be imported into the address book of your email program for entry of complete contact information of the vCard owner.

If you receive a VCF file or Vcard through email, download and import the vCard:

Click on the VCard link of the individual whose business card you would like to employ.   Use Save this file to disk.

Once saved, go to the Address Book of your mail program use Import, and then click Business Card (vCard), locating the business card file in the same place that you saved it to.  When the Business Card is added to the address book, you will be able to modify or add to the contact information as necessary.  Search for the keyword "vcard" in your email program help file for specific commands and dialogs.

If this is your first experience with a vCard, you may wish to employ vCards of your own.   (Create an entry in the Address Book of your mail program, use Export/Business Card, saving the business card file.)   You may want to heed the warning below to prevent what may be thought of as an offensive, naïve action.

Some people attach vcards to email the way that people attach business cards to paper mail.  PI recommends that you DO NOT ATTACH a vCard to every email message.   Recipients don't always know what they are or how to handle them.  It may waste time and the process may not be helpful as you intended.  (Senders to email lists have been flamed for such an action.)

Use discretion; do not repeatedly send a vCard to the same recipient.

Anyone wishing personal assistance can email me.  Here's my vCard.
